Poets’ Corner is WestWords’ monthly encounter with celebrated Australian poets, curated by David Ades.
Each month a poet is invited to read and talk about their poetry on a theme of the poet’s choice.
Steve Evans has written or edited 20 books, including eight of his poetry. He was a senior management accountant before escaping to become Head of the English Department at Flinders University as well as running the Creative Writing Program there. Now retired, he mentors writers and edits their work, and teaches creative writing in the community. Of course, he still writes: several books (poetry and novels) are completed or in the pipeline.
His work includes general adult fiction, crime fiction, poetry and nonfiction. He has received writing grants and won major prizes, including a Queensland Premier’s Prize for Poetry and a Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship, and been shortlisted for many others, such as the John Bray National Poetry Prize, Bridport Poetry Prize, Montreal Poetry Prize, the Newcastle Poetry Prize, and the 2019 Penguin Unpublished Novel Prize (one of 5 entrants among 400+).
Steve’s most recent titles are Easy Money and Other Stories (2019) and the poetry collection Unearthly Pleasures (2021). He has just completed a crime novel based in rural France and his next poetry collection, Animal Instincts, is due out in 2023.
